A deeper understanding of the aging processes at work inside electrochemical systems like batteries is crucial to extending system lifespans. New insights can be used to improve earlier-stage processes and enhance material microstructures to boost the materials’ performance.
Researchers at CEA Tech institute Liten conduct in situ and in operando observations of what happens inside batteries during actual operation. These observations of materials—at the sub-micron and nano scales—are highly reliable since there are no sudden stops and starts to the processes. The researchers use state-of-the-art resources at the nanocharacterization platform: X-ray analysis, ion beam analysis, surface analysis, near-field microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, optical imaging, sample preparation, and electron microscopy. CEA Tech also leverages privileged access to both the large European ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) instruments and ILL (Institut Laue-Langevin).
