ISKN Slate brings art and digital technology together

ISKN, the first B-to-C startup to be spun off by CEA Tech institute Leti, has done very well, with selling more than 3,000 units of its flagship Slate through several distribution channels.

It is possible to draw on a tablet with a stylus, of course. However, for an artist, there is nothing quite like the feeling of a pencil on paper. ISKN's Slate transforms traditional pens, pencils, and other drawing instruments into digital tools. With more than 3,000 units sold since it was released in 2013, the Slate has done very well. And, starting this fall, France's top four technology and entertainment chains will carry the Slate at 260 of their stores.

The Slate packs in a lot of technology. An array of ultra-sensitive magnetometers and powerful signal-processing algorithms developed at Leti precision-locate the magnet in the adjustable ring that goes on the pen or pencil. The innovation, protected by 22 patents, digitizes drawings in real time, stores them, and lets users share videos of their drawings in progress and digitally retouch their work.

The market's excellent response to the Slate has positioned ISKN, spun off from Leti in 2014 following a successful crowdfunding campaign, to double its staff in just six months. The startup plans to expand to 50 employees by year's end and has no plans to stop there. ISKN is developing new features for the Slate and plans to enter the world of video gaming with a range of completely new products.
