A team from the Biological Chemistry Laboratory (currently Chemistry and Biology of Metals laboratory) identified in Escherichia coli, in collaboration with a bacterial microbiology team of Marseille (UPR-CNRS 9043), a third system enabling the maturation of iron-sulfur centers. This new system would play a specific role in the maturation of a protein involved in the biosynthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a cofactor involved in cellular respiration (glycolysis). This discovery could challenge the assumption of the central role played by the protein scaffold in the biosynthesis of iron-sulfur proteins and in the related molecular mechanisms.
CEA is a French government-funded technological research organisation in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies. A prominent player in the European Research Area, it is involved in setting up collaborative projects with many partners around the world.
