A researcher from the Institut François Jacob awarded the CNRS 2017 bronze medal

Carole Escartin, a researcher at the François Jacob Institute of Biology (IBFJ), has won the CNRS 2017 bronze medal. This medal rewards the first work of a researcher and represents an encouragement from the CNRS to pursue research that has already been productive.

The recipient works in the MIRCen (Molecular Imaging Research Center) department at the IBFJ, where she focuses on the study of astrocytes and their potential role in the survival of neurons in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. She has developed original methods to manipulate these brain cells in vivo, to better understand how they work when they are reactive, and to evaluate their role and test the imaging modalities in situ in order to detect them in this state. Reactive astrocytes could thus constitute markers of neurodegenerative diseases, but also targets for alternative treatments against these diseases. In 2010, Carole Escartin received Young Researcher funding from the ANR; more recently, she received Tremplin-ERC funding.
