ASTROPHYSICS :
Herschel : A window opening wide for dust
It was the event of the International Year of Astronomy: the launch of the European space telescope Herschel on May 14, on-board an Ariane-5 rocket from Kourou, in French Guiana. Once in orbit, it will provide an unprecedented view of the Universe in the far-infrared and submillimeter regions, thanks to a cluster of technologies developed by a consortium of European laboratories, including several teams from CEA.

NUCLEAR ENERGY :
Nuclear fuel cycle : What is the Fuel cycle ?
In a nuclear reactor, fuel is where the fission process of heavy uranium or plutonium atoms takes place. This fission process is the source of the heat needed to produce electricity (via a turbine), or the source of energy for other applications. The heavy nuclei must follow a process including several industrial steps before they can be used in the reactor.

ENERGY AND CLIMATE :
Low carbon energies : Action by the CEA
In future decades we can expect the situation regarding energy and climate change to become more and more difficult. On one hand, population growth and essential development in emerging economies will increase the demand for energy; on the other, the depletion of fossil fuel reserves, procurement difficulties due to geopolitical tension, and global warming are all making the search for viable and competitive alternatives to hydrocarbons all the more urgent. In the 2007 edition of its World Energy Outlook report, the International Energy Agency (IEA) made the position clear. CEA is one of the major European research institutes working in the field of energy, he is part of European Energy Research Alliance (EERA).

SUPERCOMPUTING :
High-performance computing : Vast possibilities
Many scientific fields (controlled nuclear fusion, particle physics, biology, etc.) depend heavily on computer simulation, which can only make strides if technology experts, model developers, mathematicians and computer scientists converge on a common objective. After falling behind on supercomputer equipment, France and Europe are marshalling their efforts in this very competitive field, where records are being broken in rapid succession.

ENERGY
Tore Supra : Towards sustained fusion
To produce the energy of the stars here on Earth… Sixty years ago, this ambition was purely a uestion for fundamental research. From now on it embodies a key aim of civilization. Access to abundant energy is one of the greatest challenges that humanity will face during this century: the energy resources that have built our modern world are depleting inexorably, while global warming is imposing further constraints on our energy production systems.
