Our strategy

2004 saw the birth of the Digiteo Labs research centre in the field of digital technologies.

This skill centre, created by merging the Num@tec² and PCRI (Joint Centre for IT Research) projects, encompasses six academic partners (CEA, CNRS, INRIA, University of Paris-Sud, Ecole Polytechnique and Supélec) situated at the Plateau de Saclay, supported by the Essonne General Council and the Ile-de-France Regional Council. Digiteo Labs today numbers 1,200 researchers, forecasted to be 1,800 in 2009 in its future buildings of Saclay, Plateau de Moulon and Palaiseau. Strongly motivated towards working with industrial partners, Digiteo Labs is involved in ten projects (out of thirteen) in SYSTEM@TIC Paris Région which is one of the national pole for competitiveness including the major players in the field of complex systems.

Integrating software into electronic chips is a major strategic issue for CEA, focusing its research on three distinct themes :

  • Interactive systems requiring research into knowledge engineering, robotics, virtual reality, etc. In particular, CEA has developed research programmes for handling of "virtual" objects or at great distance via a force-feedback arm. As an example in the health sector, thanks to the support of the Caisses d'Epargne Foundation, CEA and the APPROCHE Association have designed and produced the Kinérob programme for the functional rehabilitation of patients, with the CEA start-up company Haption.
  • Interconnected and communicating embedded systems, increasingly found in our environment (energy, automobiles, mobile phones, railway transport, aeronautics, etc.). The constant growth in speed and quantity of exchanged data needs solutions that overcome new technological breakthroughs. For example in the safety field, CEA has developed GATeL, an automatic test generation tool, allowing the check of the "critical" software used in transport applications.
  • Sensors and signal processing, an essential part of digital systems. CEA is focusing on sensors based on diamonds, fibre optics, and those using ultrasound and eddy current waves with the aim of producing new measurement and simulation methods for applications as diverse as transport, nuclear and health. One of the programmes coordinated by CEA in FP6, the 6 th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, is EURITRACK (EURopean Illicit TRAfficking Countermeasures Kit). This programme is grouping several research bodies, universities and companies from five European countries to develop a control system using X-rays and neutron inspection, to characterise sea containers for illicit trafficking monitoring.

Our partners

CEA collaborates with major industrials in the fields of transport (Renault, PSA, EADS, Dassault Aviation, Alstom, etc.), and of information and communication technologies (Thalès, Bertin Technologies, Systran, etc.).

Figures & research resources

CEA has grouped its software expertise in its Technology Systems Integration Laboratory (LIST), with around 450 researchers and a budget of €33M.
