Polymer-derived ceramic coatings: from design to industrial application

Over the last decade or so, CEA-Liten has been developing composite coatings intended for various applications, including thermal protection, fire barriers, and resistance to erosion and chemical corrosion. ACHIEF (Innovative high performance Alloys and Coatings for HIghly EFficient intensive energy processes, 2020 – 2024, grant 958374), an EU project coordinated by CEA, has demonstrated the benefits of these materials in industrial applications of resistance to acid corrosion.

Innovative polymers for recyclable-by-design solar panels

Although solar photovoltaic energy production is considered a pillar of the energy transition, the technology is not without its own environmental drawbacks. The manufacturing of solar panels generates significant impacts and, as the current design do not anticipate the dismantling step, the panels are notoriously difficult to recycle at the end of their service life.

Reducing the photovoltaic industry's environmental footprint by saving silver

By 2022, 15% of the world's silver supply will be devoted to the photovoltaic industry: significantly reducing its use is crucial to the industry's future financial and environmental viability. Our teams at INES have therefore set themselves the ambitious challenge of reducing its current consumption from 35mg/Wp to just 5mg/Wp by 2030.

A long expertise in Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP), at the service of the metallurgical industry

CEA has been using Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) to manufacture complex parts for nearly 40 years. HIP can be used to post-process parts manufactured using conventional casting and powder metallurgy processes. It can also be used to sinter powders, effectively compacting them, and to assemble solid parts by diffusion welding. HIP, once reserved for the nuclear and aeronautics industries, is now making inroads into the renewable energy market, where it is helping support the energy transition.
