All-solid-state batteries are a promising avenue for the next generation of energy storage systems, especially for electric vehicles, aerospace and defense. It could increase the - energy density at the cell level by up to 50% while also improving system safety. One of the main challenge to industrialize this technology is to scale up the fabrication of very thin and uniform lithium metal negative electrode In 2022, the CEA, Saft (a TotalEnergies company), and Automotive Cells Company (ACC) kicked off a joint R&D project to address these issues. The initial results have just been published.

Hydrogen has already been widely identified as a potential energy vector in the transition to renewables. However, a cost-competitive, zero-carbon hydrogen technology that can operate in both fuel-cell mode to produce electricity and in electrolyzer mode to produce hydrogen will be needed for widespread deployment to become a reality. The solid oxide electrolyzer/fuel cell (SOEC/SOFC) has emerged as a high-yield, reversible, and affordable solution.

Wattway is a French innovation, the fruit of several years of joint R&D by Colas, a world leader in transport infrastructure, and the CEA-Liten laboratories in the frame of l’ITE INES.2S.. As the world's first circulatory photovoltaic pavement, it can be installed on existing roadways to generate renewable electricity. The latest version of the Wattway pavement has just been certified to current IEC standards in the photovoltaic sector, like any standard solar panel - an exciting result and a world first for a circulable module.

By 2022, 15% of the world's silver supply will be devoted to the photovoltaic industry: significantly reducing its use is crucial to the industry's future financial and environmental viability. Our teams at INES have therefore set themselves the ambitious challenge of reducing its current consumption from 35mg/Wp to just 5mg/Wp by 2030.

CEA has been using Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) to manufacture complex parts for nearly 40 years. HIP can be used to post-process parts manufactured using conventional casting and powder metallurgy processes. It can also be used to sinter powders, effectively compacting them, and to assemble solid parts by diffusion welding. HIP, once reserved for the nuclear and aeronautics industries, is now making inroads into the renewable energy market, where it is helping support the energy transition.

Enel Green Power and the CEA at INES are developing high efficiency bifacial photovoltaic panels. This technology, intended mainly for large-scale ground-mounted power plants, can gain even more energy-efficient, and not only thanks to the efficiency of cells and modules. The addition of an energy conversion system, as close as possible to the panel, makes it possible to reduce the impact of certain defects linked to the installation site and to increase the overall power of the plant.
