​Study of energy bioconversion process in photosynthetic and microbial organisms

​This transverse axis concerns photosynthetic electron transfer mechanisms and their connection with the metabolism of carbon sequestration, the metabolism of reserves or the bioproduction of hydrogen. These research lines are tackled through the study of structure-function relationships of different protein complexes dedicated to these processes, such as photosystem II, the b6/f complex and antenna complexes, by the study of the protection mechanisms of the photosynthetic apparatus under light stress, by the study of the regulation of the different routes of electron transfer, linear or alternative, in relation to the different metabolic pathways of energy storage.

Energy bioconversion processes are also analyzed in microorganisms by the study of enzymatic redox mechanisms as well as the study of extracellular electron transfer processes in electrogenic bacteria, in connection with the optimization of microbial fuel cells.

Science fronts in this area concern the biochemical and biophysical mechanisms of light-energy conversion and dissipation and electron transfer mechanisms in biological membranes, in the perspective of biomimetic applications.
