At the nanometric scale (approximately 10 atoms side by side), classical and quantum physics become inseparable, and surface phenomena become predominant. Nanoscience explores the properties of this new world.
Multidisciplinary teams at the Institut rayonnement matière de Saclay (Iramis) and the Institut nanosciences et cryogénie (Inac) (in Grenoble) are responsible for a larger number of discoveries in nanoscience. These discoveries have led to new applications in various different fields, such as spintronics, quantronics, photonics, molecular electronics and material science.
