Publication - Report on Security of Sustainable Energy Supplies
The report stresses the urgent need for Europe to shift from its economic and strategic dependency on energy imports (fossil fuels as well as technologies) to locally produced sustainable power (based on both renewables and nuclear) and derived e-fuels and e-molecules, with associated value chains located in the EU. It also outlines the importance of energy efficiency, energy sufficiency, empowering local communities and reducing energy poverty.
It outlines the complexity of the topic and the numerous issues at stake. Among them, cybersecurity will be critical. There is also an urgent need for more R&D, to develop at industrial scale the solutions required for providing more flexibility to the European interconnected electricity system.
Bertrand Charmaison, head of I-Tésé, participated in the writing of the report as a representative of the French Académie des sciences.
