This independent European structure recommends orientations and gives its opinion on PV solar energy policy. It is recognised by the European Commission and the Group director of the Strategic Energy Technology (SET) plan as the representative of the photovoltaic energy sector. Its recommendations concern areas such as research & innovation, development of the PV market, and training & industrial policy in the sector.

Solar Power Europe

The CEA takes part in SolarPower Europe, a new European industrial association for photovoltaic energy (EPIA: European Photovoltaic Industry Association). SolarPower Europe represents organisations and aims to shape the PV regulatory environment and to develop the commercial opportunities for solar energy in Europe.

Hydrogen and fuel cells

Fuel Cells & Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU)

The CEA is an active member of the Fuel Cells & Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), which is a public-private partnership supporting the research, development and demonstration of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in Europe. One of its objectives is to accelerate the pace at which low-carbon technologies reach their market. Fuel cells are an efficient technology for converting energy and hydrogen is a clean energy vector. Therefore, they represents a huge potential in terms of fighting CO2 emissions and reducing fossil fuel dependency, while contributing to economic growth.
The CEA is also a member of the Hydrogen Europe Research.

EERA joint programme on hydrogen and fuel cells

The CEA is a very active member of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA), which includes governance responsibilities. This association has the objective of strengthening and developing Europe's research capabilities in the field of sustainable energy by connecting and pooling European energy research activities. The CEA is actively contributing to this joint programme devoted to hydrogen and fuel cells which aims to accelerate and harmonise long-term research on fuel cells and electrolysers.

European Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (EHA)

The CEA takes part in the European Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (EHA) via the association française pour l’hydrogène et les piles à combustible (AFHYPAC). This collaboration was set up to promote the use of hydrogen as an energy vector in Europe. Its purpose is to create a commercial market for stationary and transport applications, with the goal of becoming the leader in the field.

Electric vehicles

European Green Vehicles Initiative

The CEA is involved in the European Green Vehicles Initiative (EGVI) within the scope of its research on green cars.  This public-private partnership is centred on the delivery of green cars and innovative mobility systems that overcome societal, environmental and economic challenges facing tomorrow's generations. Focusing on the energy efficiency of vehicles and alternative powertrains, EGVI has the ambition to drive the research, development and demonstration of technologies harnessing clean energies for road transport.

2nd and 3rd generation biofuels

Bio-Based Industries (BBI)

The CEA is a member of the Bio-Based Industries joint undertaking which encourages investment in the sustainable development of the European bio-based products industry. This public-private partnership is designed to help Europe become a key player in the research, demonstration and deployment of bio-based products and fuels, while providing environmental and socio-economic advantages for Europe and its citizens.

EERA joint programme on bioenergy

The CEA is a very active member of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA), which includes governance responsibilities. This association has the objective of strengthening and developing Europe's research capabilities in the field of sustainable energy. The CEA is actively involved in the joint programme on bioenergy which sets out to harmonise pre-competitive research led by the EERA institutes so as to build a scientific and technical base on which the future generation of biofuels can be launched and the joint development of technologies can be explored. The more efficient use of R&D investments through this joint programme should help accelerate the development of future generations of energy conversion systems.

Energy efficiency and conservation in buildings

Energy-Efficient Building (E2B) Association

The CEA is a member of the Energy-Efficient Buildings (E2B) association. This European programme devoted to researching and demonstrating the energy efficiency of buildings is led by the industry. Its objective is to make sure all buildings in Europe are designed, built or renovated in line with the new energy efficiency standards by 2050. E2B is therefore working towards the 20/20 targets set by the European Commission to reduce energy consumption by 20%, reduce CO2 emissions by 20% and provide 20% of the energy requirements by renewable energy sources by 2020.

EERA joint programme on energy efficiency in industrial processes

The CEA is a very active member of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA), which includes governance responsibilities. This association has the objective of strengthening and developing Europe's research capabilities in the field of sustainable energy. The CEA is actively involved in the joint programme on energy efficiency in industrial processes. This programme has the goal of recommending advanced concepts designed to reduce energy consumption while cutting operational and maintenance costs in the industry.

Cross-functional activities in the field of renewable energy

Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative (EMIRI)

The CEA is involved in the Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative (EMIRI) which was launched in 2012 within the scope of the SET Plan and the roadmap for materials. The initiative brings together industrial players and research organisations in the European Union to foster innovation in the field of advanced materials with low carbon emissions, while improving energy efficiency levels. This is the only organisation in Europe that offers a cross-functional approach in the field. With a strategic approach to research and innovation right up to market access, EMIRI can target sectors like solar energy (PV and solar thermal), hydrogen & fuel cells, wind energy, ocean energy, carbon capture & storage, and grids.
