Some bacteria, including species that cause diseases in humans, are able to form spores, insensitive to most antibacterial treatments owing to cellular structures that protect them from external aggression. The cell envelope, made of a lipidic membrane and complex sugar polymers, also plays an important role in bacterial survival. The structures of the bacterial spore and envelope are not yet fully elucidated, mainly because they involve macromolecular complexes of nanometric dimensions. To study these aspects, we generated cell sections and observed them using state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopy techniques. The high-resolution data generated on the architecture of the spore and cell envelope opens the way to a better understanding of the factors contributing to bacterial proliferation and resistance.
