LIPANG platform for lipidomic analysis

The LIPANG platform has been operational since 2019. A structural analysis line, integrating thin-layer chromatography coupled with ion trap mass spectrometry, now makes it possible to establish the glycerolipidome, with the positioning of fatty acids on the glycerol backbone, of any organism.

The platform can identify and quantify fatty acids, as well as all classes of glycerolipids, from phospholipids, the main constituents of membranes in all living organisms, to galactolipids specific to photosynthetic organisms, and triacylglycerols, the major constituents of lipid droplets. It has also recently become capable of analysing sterols, including cholesterol, ergosterol and phytosterol, and pigments such as carotenoids and chlorophylls.

How do I submit a project to the platform?

The LIPANG platform is available for internal research projects involving the Laboratory of Cellular and Plant Physiology (LPCV), collaborations funded by external parties, or industrial partnerships. For further information, please send an email to liste-gre-lipang@cea.fr. You will receive a reply within a week. In order to understand your expectations, a telephone or video conference will be organised and, if the platform's capabilities can meet your needs, a quote will then be provided based on your requirements. LIPANG's expertise focuses on photosynthetic organisms. The platform will therefore give priority to analyses on this type of matrix, although it can work on other samples.

Project example

Analysis of the lipidome of microalgae in the Alps

The ALPALGA project is one example among many supported by the Lipid team at the Laboratory of Cellular and Plant Physiology (LPCV). This team studies the response of algae to thermal stress by assessing the biodiversity of microalgae in mountainous regions and deciphering their interaction with the environment.

For this project, which is also supported by the Killian Jornet Foundation, the platform established the glycerolipidome of a snow sample enriched in Sanguina Nivaloides, quantified its lipid content and determined the glycerolipidome of two new strains of Deuterostichococcus isolated in the snow. The objective is now to establish the glycerolipidome of three other strains isolated in snow and to analyse the variation in their lipid composition under different growth conditions, including light, temperature and nutrient deprivation.
