According to a study conducted by the European Patent Office covering the period 2001-2020 and issued on 22 October 2025, France tops the European ranking for patents filed from public research. This momentum is driven in particular by the CEA which ranks second. With nearly 9.000 patents filed by its teams between 2001 et 2020, this result also confirms CEA's strategy of support for innovation. In the meantime, the patents filed by all French public research bodies represent nearly 14% of global French applicants and 40% of those carried by public European institutes.

In its study, the European Patent Office acknowledged “public research as one of Europe's greatest strengths", particularly in strategic fields such as health, biotechnologies, semiconductors and digital technologies. Yann Ménière, its Chief economist, said: « This study shows that Europe has a very powerful and efficient deeptech research system relying on science ». CEA's deeptech commitment is also recognised in the Clarivate top 100 of innovators where he has been ranking at the first place for many years. The CEA is the only research body to maintain such a level of presence and influence in this ranking, that assesses each year more than 3.000 firms and research bodies worldwide.
