A New Instrument for Advanced Interface Analysis in Batteries

Published on 30 April 2025

A deep understanding of battery performance relies heavily on accurate analysis of internal interfaces. However, conventional dismantling processes performed prior to characterization (SEM, TEM, XPS, TOF-SIMS, etc.) can significantly alter these sensitive regions.

To preserve sample integrity and enhance characterization quality, our platform has recently been equipped with a laser tool integrated into our CrossBeam 550 FIB. This system enables rapid cross-sectioning and air-tight transfer under controlled atmosphere. As a result, interfaces remain intact until the moment of analysis, making it possible to extract site-specific TEM lamellae and obtain high-precision data.

This high-performance and strategically important equipment has been funded and supported by the French National Research Agency (ANR) under the France 2030 investment plan, through the PEPR Batteries – EQUIBAT-CEA project [ANR-22-PEBA-0008] and the EQUIPEX IMAGINE2 project.
