A joint CEA and Inserm team, with the support of the Saint-Louis Hospital, the University of Paris Diderot and the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation, has been able to observe the beginning of the differentiation of stem cells into blood cells. Using a "bone marrow on a chip", the researchers brought stem cells into contact with other types of cells present in the bone marrow. The result: some of them change their shape and internal architecture. An unexpected discovery that opens up new avenues for studying many blood diseases.
CEA is a French government-funded technological research organisation in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies. A prominent player in the European Research Area, it is involved in setting up collaborative projects with many partners around the world.
