The CEA ranks among the world's top 5 patent holders for solar photovoltaics

The CEA ranks 5th among worldwide applicants in terms of international patent families registered in the field of photovoltaics for the period 2020-2023 and 13th for the period 1990-2023.

Published on 11 September 2025

This ranking is based on the report 'Advances in photovoltaics, Technology trends for solar energy' published in July 2025 by the European Patent Office in collaboration with the European Innovation Council.

📌 With 145 international patent families, including 87 for 'tandem cells', which cover our perovskite-on-silicon activities, the CEA is the only public research organization in the world to feature in the top 20.

The European Patent Office, based in Munich, is the authority that grants European patents. It has a patent database containing documentation on more than 160 million patents from patent authorities on all continents.

👏 We are proud of and grateful to the researchers, engineers and technicians who invent, write and protect these inventions!

Since 2005, CEA-Liten, INES and ITE INES.2S have been the reference centre in France and a major international player in research, innovation and training in photovoltaic solar energy.
