Photovoltaics Systems

To bring PV solar energy production costs down, PV systems architectures will need to be optimized and converters to enable effective coupling with the grid developed. Monitoring and forecasting software will also be required.

Liten's research is addressing the different components that make up a PV power plant and software to optimize systems in terms of design and coupling with the grid.

Specifically, Liten is developing tools to:

Evaluate PV system performance and profitability using databases with monitoring data from power plants operating in real-world conditions.

Predict production and troubleshoot malfunctions using modeling and simulation software.

  • Software to combine meteorological data and cloud-cover observations.

  • Algorithms to estimate fouling, degradation, faults, and losses per unit.

Optimize coupling with the grid with new-generation, high-yield, compact, and affordable power inverters.

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) inverters and components: 5 kW to 250 kW.

  • Gallium nitride (GaN) inverters and components: 100 W to 5 kW.

Increase PV penetration using innovative approaches to integrating solar power plants into spaces that are already built up, such as shopping malls and factories and along highways and railroad tracks.

These hardware and software development programs are run on test platforms and equipment at scales representative of actual use.
