Geert Haarlemmer est diplômé de l'Université de Technologie d'Eindhoven en chimie et titulaire d'un doctorat de l'Université de Manchester (UMIST). Il a rejoint le CEA-Liten en 2009 et est actuellement directeur de recherche.

Ses principaux centres d'intérêts sont les technologies de conversion de la biomasse, et plus particulièrement la conversion hydrother​male de la biomasse pour produire des biocarburants.​
