Dr. Hab.
In 2000, Angel Kirchev began his career as a researcher at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) when he joined the BAS Institute for Electrochemistry and Energy Systems' (IEES) Lead Battery Department. During his tenure at BAS-IEES, he was involved in several European-Commission-funded R&D projects, the Advanced Lead-Acid Battery Consortium, and the US Army's European Research Office.
During that time, he also pursued his PhD, with a dissertation on oxygen recombination processes in sealed lead-acid batteries—research that won him a Dave Rice Award in 2005. The same year, he joined CEA-Liten's energy storage team.
- Electrochemistry;
- Storage of renewable energy;
- Hydrogen production.
All-solid-state batteries are a promising avenue for the next generation of energy storage systems, especially for electric vehicles, aerospace and defense. It could increase the - energy density at the cell level by up to 50% while also improving system safety. One of the main challenge to industrialize this technology is to scale up the fabrication of very thin and uniform lithium metal negative electrode In 2022, the CEA, Saft (a TotalEnergies company), and Automotive Cells Company (ACC) kicked off a joint R&D project to address these issues. The initial results have just been published.
The CEA is innovating to facilitate the reuse of end-of-life batteries and is developing tools and methods to, for instance, quickly identify their state of health or predict their lifetime in a future application.
