Dr. Hab.
Research Director Hai Trieu Phan, who joined the CEA in 2017, develops thermodynamic technologies for industrial heating and cooling applications.
He earned a PhD in fluid mechanics and energetics from Grenoble Alpes University in 2010. His dissertation won the AFM Paul Germain Award in 2011 and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Award in 2012.
From 2010 to 2011, he worked as a research engineer at the CNES in Toulouse, where he focused on the thermodynamic modeling of loop heat pipes, a type of cooling system used in space applications.
He was employed by GE Renewable Energy (formerly Alstom Power) from 2011 to 2017, where he held positions as R&D engineer and principal engineer.
He has supervised several PhDs in the field of thermodynamic systems at the CEA.
- Thermodynamic systems;
- Absorption cycle;
- Liquid-vapor phase change;
- Two-phase flows.
After two years of collaboration, the European CACTUS project is coming to a close, leaving behind a major scientific and methodological legacy for the solar photovoltaic sector: diagnostic tools, reference datasets, and innovative approaches for evaluating the performance and resilience of photovoltaic systems. The work has also resulted in strategic recommendations for policymakers, compiled in a Policy Brief, to support the sustainable and reliable deployment of photovoltaics on a global scale.
Researchers at CEA-Liten have developed a 10 kW prototype that can increase the temperature of industrial waste heat from 80°C to over 100°C, while consuming very little power. Beyond improved performance, this study has provided valuable insights on optimizing and controlling these systems for widespread industrial use.
