When the history-making Cassini spacecraft descended into Saturn's atmosphere for a fiery finale in September, two decades and two mission extensions after its launch, scientists at Leti could proudly say "mission accomplished". Leti and the Astrophysics Laboratory at CEA Saclay had designed, tested and fabricated infrared detectors for Cassini's Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS). Spectrometers split light into different colors, like a glass prism, and CIRS was special because it was sensitive to invisible heat rays, or infrared light emitted by the planet, its rings and its moons.
Scientific result
The new-generation liquid argon detector used in the WA105 experiment at CERN has collected its first signals. This prototype is used in preparation of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) for neutrino observations on a mass scale, which is due to start in 2026 in the USA. This research involving IRFU aims, in particular, to shed light on the origin of matter and antimatter.
In collaboration with scientists from the Frédéric-Joliot Institute, a team from IRAMIS has developed a microfluidic device coupled with a mass spectrometry technique. The scientists were able to multiply the analysis sensitivity by thirty compared to the current state of the art, as shown by a spectrum obtained using this process on a deposit of a model peptide of a few femtomoles (10-15).
A Research Team from the SHFJ (IMIV) highlights, through a preclinical model of exposure to alcohol, an immediate and persistent neuro-immune response, several months after the initial exposure of alcohol. These results confirm the occurrence of brain damage that may play a key role in the neurological deficits reported in teenagers who like "binge-drinking", that is to say an excessive consumption of alcohol over a very short time.
