Renewable energy and Energy efficiency
CEA Tech institute Liten began its bio-based energy R&D with a gasification technique to convert cellulosic biomass into fuel. The institute then shifted its focus to alternative processes with a high heat of combustion for household waste, food manufacturing residues, wastewater treatment sludge, and other types of waste.
Dry biomass like cellulose and solid recovered fuel (SRF) are processed using high-temperature gasification; hydrothermal liquefaction is used to convert wet biomass into organic compounds.
Liten’s knowledge of gasification processes (thermochemical) spans all stages in the biomass treatment process. The biomass is collected and concentrated using drying, grinding, and torrefaction before being transformed in high-temperature gasification reactors.
ALL TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS
For the first time ever, diesel fuel has been produced by refining the oil contained in biocrude made using hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgae. The first-ever drops of diesel to be obtained in this way prove that this method for producing biofuel is technically feasible—a major step forward.
The REACSOL solar reactor developed by Liten, a CEA Tech institute, was successfully used for high-temperature biomass gasification in tests carried out in conjunction with lab CNRS-PROMES. The results of the tests—gasification of wood-based biomass continuously fed into the reactor with concentrated solar energy as the heat source—were encouraging.
The Génépi biofuel platform is open! Following three years of construction, most of the facility’s equipment is now operational. The platform is ready to innovate efficient biomass gasification methods to produce fuel.
How to collaborate with CEA Tech teams ?
CEA is a French government-funded technological research organisation in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies. A prominent player in the European Research Area, it is involved in setting up collaborative projects with many partners around the world.
