CEA Tech institute Liten is working to improve battery lifespans and performance for stationary and mobile energy storage solutions.
The institute conducts testing in real-world conditions and aging tests to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that underpin battery degradation. The goal is to determine the best management strategy for the type of use. The institute also conducts research to determine reliable battery-health indicators.
Liten researchers are helping develop new generations of batteries, like very-low-cost sodium-ion batteries (sodium is abundantly available) and lithium-sulfur batteries, which offer three times the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries of equivalent mass. Liten researchers have already made great strides toward improving the performance and extending the lifespans of these batteries of the future.

Silicon electrodes are among the frontrunners in the race to replace the graphite electrodes currently used in Lithium batteries. Several imaging and spectroscopy techniques have provided a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that underpin silicon electrode degradation.
Liten, a CEA Tech institute, recently produced the first-ever cylindrical lithium-sulfur battery. The prototype’s performance indicates a bright future for the batteries!
